Sightseeing Paths & POIs: A Route-by-Route Guide
Use this guide to turn the HoHo network into a sequence of walkable, memorable experiences. Refer to the route map image (above) for exact stops and relative positions.
How to use this guide
- Start by scanning the map to identify 1–2 ‘anchor’ stops you want to explore (museums, big viewpoints).
- Use the HoHo as a connector — ride between anchors and hop off for targeted, walkable loops.
- Prioritize one walking loop per half-day to avoid fatigue and to allow time for photos.
Core loops and POIs
1) Loop & Riverwalk Loop (Downtown core)
- Key anchor stops: Millennium Park, Art Institute, Chicago Theatre / Loop, Riverwalk access points.
- Walking path: From Millennium Park head south along Michigan Avenue to the Art Institute, then east toward the Chicago River and drop down to the Riverwalk. Follow the Riverwalk east-west for multiple photo vantage points and cafes. Reboard at the closest HoHo pier stop.
- Top POIs: Cloud Gate (The Bean), Lurie Garden, Art Institute highlights (Impressionists), Chicago River bridges and architectural markers.
- Timing: Allow 2–3 hours if entering the Art Institute; 60–90 minutes for a Riverwalk + quick museum highlights loop.
- Photo tip: Early morning at Millennium Park avoids crowds; golden hour along the Riverwalk creates strong reflections.
2) Magnificent Mile & North Branch (Shopping & Views)
- Key anchor stops: Michigan Avenue / Magnificent Mile, Oak Street, Streeterville.
- Walking path: Exit on the Magnificent Mile and walk north toward Oak Street for boutique shopping and architectural façades; detour east to the river for bridge frames. The area connects back south toward the Loop if you want to return by bus.
- Top POIs: Historic Water Tower, Tribune Tower facades, boutique-fronted Oak Street, river viewpoints near Wacker Drive.
- Timing: 1–3 hours depending on shopping and optional museum stops.
- Accessibility: Sidewalks are generally flat but can be crowded; curb cuts present at major intersections.
3) Museum Campus & Lakeshore (South / Cultural Loop)
- Key anchor stops: Museum Campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium).
- Walking path: Hop off and follow the shoreline paths between institutions — the lakeside promenade offers direct views of Navy Pier and skyline panoramas. The HoHo is useful to move between the campus and near-by transit hubs.
- Top POIs: Tyrannosaurus skeleton at the Field, aquatic displays at Shedd, Adler planetarium skyline viewpoint.
- Timing: Plan 2–4 hours for one major museum; combine two if you have a full day.
- Practical tip: Buy combo tickets or reserve timed entries for Shedd to avoid queues.
4) Navy Pier & East Lakeshore (Family & Evenings)
- Key anchor stops: Navy Pier, east Riverwalk terminus.
- Walking path: From the pier, stroll the lakeshore paths or cut inland to the Riverwalk for evening skyline reflections. The pier is compact but packed with family attractions and food stalls.
- Top POIs: Ferris wheel, seasonal festivals, boat piers for architectural cruises.
- Timing: 1–2 hours for pier activities; extend for dinner or sunset photography.
5) Lincoln Park & Wrigleyville (Neighborhood Loop)
- Key anchor stops: Lincoln Park Zoo, North Avenue Beach access, Wrigley Field (seasonal).
- Walking path: Use the HoHo to reach Lincoln Park, then follow paths through the park to the zoo and nearby conservatories. To reach Wrigleyville, plan a separate hop — it’s further north but accessible and worth a half-day visit if you’re a sports or neighborhood culture fan.
- Top POIs: Lincoln Park Conservatory, North Avenue Beach views, Wrigleyville atmosphere on game days.
- Timing: 2–4 hours for a relaxed neighborhood visit.
Short walking detours that pay off
- Wacker Drive riverside walk: Short detour from bridge stops gives classic canyon views of Chicago’s skyscrapers.
- LaSalle Street / Board of Trade arc: A quick walk from Loop stops to experience the financial-district façades and classical sculpture.
- Michigan Avenue alleys & arcades: Shaded, photogenic passages with historic storefronts.
Sample half-day itineraries
- Architecture half-day: Start Millennium Park → River cruise (75 min) → Riverwalk photos → Reboard for Willis Tower at sunset.
- Family half-day: Morning Navy Pier rides → Lunch at Riverwalk cafes → Afternoon Shedd Aquarium.
- Neighborhood stroll: Magnificent Mile browsing → Oak Street boutiques → Short northbound HoHo hop to Lincoln Park for the zoo.
Accessibility & practical notes
- Many HoHo vehicles offer low-floor boarding or ramps; confirm with the operator for wheelchair specifics.
- Plan legs around elevator access at major stops if mobility is a concern (Art Institute, Field Museum).
- Off-peak boarding reduces wait times and makes walking detours more pleasant.
Packing & timing tips
- Carry a refillable water bottle and a compact umbrella; Chicago weather can shift quickly.
- Wear comfortable shoes — most detours are short but paved; bring a small pack for cameras and snacks.
- If you’re shooting photos, bring a polarizing filter for river reflections and a mid-range zoom for architectural details.
Final map note
- Consult the route map image above (
big_bus_map_01.webp) to plan exact boarding points and relative distances between anchors. Use the HoHo for efficient transfers and treat walking loops as the way to make the map come alive.
