Seasonal Guide: Summer vs Winter (expanded)
Chicago's personality shifts dramatically across seasons. Your HoHo plan should adapt.
Summer (May–September)
- What to expect: Frequent service, outdoor vendors, festivals, longer daylight.
- Best stops: Navy Pier, Riverwalk, Millennium Park events.
- Tips: Reserve timed attractions (Skydeck) in advance; wear breathable layers and sunscreen.
Winter (December–March)
- What to expect: Less frequent buses, winter markets, snow or icy sidewalks.
- Best stops: Indoor-heavy days — Art Institute, Field Museum, Willis Tower.
- Tips: Check operator weather advisories; plan indoor back-ups and allow extra reboarding time.
Shoulder seasons (Spring & Fall)
- Spring can be muddy near parks; fall offers crisp light and colorful parks — both are excellent for architecture photography.
Packing checklist by season
- Summer: Hat, sunscreen, water bottle, sunglasses.
- Winter: Insulated jacket, waterproof boots, gloves, hand warmers, spare batteries.
- Shoulder seasons: Lightweight waterproof layer and an extra sweater.
